Its Time to Eat. Now What?

I frequently work here as long as I can, then realize too late I need to eat if I am going to remain standing/sociable/conscious. Here it is now, Friday night, about 8:00, and I need to get dinner somewhere close to the shop. I already know about Hola up in Lunardi’s Plaza. Great food, good prices, and pretty good service. And the margaritas there are pretty awesome. Sushi Monster on Ralston near El Camino is also a good choice. Great prices, good food, lots of variety with specialty rolls, and they also seem to be open almost all the time. I have been in there more than once after 10:00.

I’ve been to Marvin Gardens, and Auciello’s. I’ll go back to both of those. Haven’t yet been to Caprino’s though.

What else is there? Throw out some comments regarding your favorite local restaurant, what makes it so.

Luna’s is really good, as is Marvin Gardens.

If you like dim sum, China VIllage Restaurant on Ralston sure ain’t bad.

Steve’s Deli on Redwood Shores makes really nice sandwiches for lunch.

I will second the notion for Luna’s as above. I’ve been supporting this guy from the third day he opened up, really just a great place to eat and hang out with the owner (I went in often enough he made my friends this authentic shrimp dip free of charge).

Also another quality Mexican place is Las Matates. This is located at the end of Holly, right against 101. Good, cheap, and fast mexican food. I always find with both of the places I have listed I’m the only white person in the place, making me think the food must be good.

Another great place is Lorenzo’s. It’s up Ralston across from the Shell station next to the shoe repair shop. These are the best sandwiches I have ever had. They close early (3 or 4) so it’s a lunch only place but highly recommended. This is the definition of hole in the wall in Belmont.

Closer to where you are I’d recommend Dairy Bell (good and greasy) also makes a pretty good milkshake. Just a block from that is god’s gift to donuts, Chuck’s donuts. This is a must have for those donuts craving (mostly for me since they are open 24 hours).

Luna’s on El Camino (across from Quizno’s) is very authentic Mexican food, at a very good price – enjoy!

Oh! And, make sure to get some rest!!!

Jersey Joes

Awesome Philly Cheesesteaks, get them with sweet peppers and onions. Then top it off with some of that hot sauce they have in the squeeze bottles. the best this California boy has ever had. awesome.

I hear the chicken cheesesteaks (did I say that??) are also pretty damn good. I’ve also had the Italian Hoggie, another solid choice.

Get there.

Also, in DT San Carlos, you’ve gotta try San Remo’s pizza. Great quality pizza. There are sometimes when any pizza will do, for the rest of the time, try San Remo’s.

OK if ya like burgers then you have to check out Jefferys Burgers in Downtown San Mateo, going north on B street and its on your left. I have eaten there many times before and they are excellent, a little pricy but excellent. Another place to try is Masu on 3rd going toward El Camino great place!

Charles, here are some additional choices:

In the same shopping center as Hola, Gin Mon is a local favorite for Chinese, and Coyote Grill is an acceptable quick/cheap non-traditional burrito place.
Even closer to the shop and super-cheap, the Dairy Bell on Ralston - which has no atmosphere - is quite clean inside and has decent burgers/chicken strips and shakes.
Toward San Mateo, on El Camino, next to the Granite Planet, the Chao Praya has good Thai food.

And finally, the top but expensive eating in Belmont area has to be the trio of Divino (fantastic appetizers), Vivace (ask for the Chicken Voldostano which is no longer on the menu but delicious), and Mistral (in Foster City near Oracle but also great food).

Ok, here’s an option that is much bypassed. There is a restaurant called Habibi at 550 Masonic Way – in the plaza behind the Arco station (off Ralston near 101). With a name like that, you would think it would be Middle Eastern food. But it is actually south east Asian (Thai, Vietnamese, etc.).

Here’s the Yelp review page – http://www.yelp.com/biz/aQWWSgEKK4bceszRGsMccw Seems that those who went expecting Middle Eastern food rated it low, and those who went looking for South East Asian food, rated it well. So ignore the name and don’t go there looking for hummus or baba ghanoush.
