One of the interesting things about coming in to Passion Trail Bikes is that you never know what you will see there. Last week was no exception, with an interesting track bike in the shop. Take a look at the photo at the right (feel free to click on it to see a higher resolution version) and see if you can figure out what is unusual about it?

Oops, no can do. Not at least until the customer brings the bike back for more service. I snapped a picture or two of the chain, but that was all. Charles has long since finished the work and the customer has picked up the bike.

~Now since I’ve taken the bait, and am on the hook, how about some more pics of the rest of the bike!! I’m gonna assume that it’s a classic Paramount or Madison fixed-gear, correct?

Halfro – You called it. It is a skip tooth chain, which is a chain style where the links are spaced about one inch apart, and the wheel and chainring cogs’ teeth are spaced accordingly.

Charles said that these chains were often used on bikes up until about the 1950s. Schwinn stopped using them around 1955.

That is and older style of chain used before the 3/32 and 1/8, I beilive it is refered to as “inch pitch”, meaning the gap is a whole inch! Gee-willigers!
