Sunset is at 8:33PM this Wednesday 06/16/2010. Twilight ends and near-darkness falls right around 9:20pm.
Next week we are doing an experiment: Restaurant dining after the Wride. Think of it as giving the PTB cleaning crew the night off. Details in the next week’s newsletter.
This week we are bringing back a staple wride: The Wridiculous Do-Over Wride. This wride features, depending on the leader, a ridiculous amount of attempts at steep climbs, sketchy trials moves, or simply “doing over” a challenging part of the trail that you often, or usually, dab or walk. The Do-Over Wride involves a lot of turning around, going back, trying again, coaching and advising, cheering and jeering, etc. There is a challenge out there for everyone, no matter how skilled or unskilled you are, you can try and test yourself on something you find difficult. Required: sense of humor, patience with others, patience with yourself. Prohibited: bad attitude. Recommended: armor, if you have it. Tolerated: watching but not doing, this time.

Please remember to put a light on your handlebar and have a blinky ready for the ride back to the shop! CA vehicle code requires it. Don’t get caught out on the streets in the dark! Also, a reminder that we need to be super conscientious about stopping at stop signs and lights, yielding to pedestrians, and operating our bikes predictably and responsibly while on the roads and trails. Let’s be safe and kind out there.
For all the details about what makes each group listed below unique, please refer to this webpage. If your questions aren’t answered there, you can also email us for info at info@passiontrailbikes.com.
All rides start pedaling from the shop: Passion Trail Bikes, 415 Old County Road, Belmont, CA 94002 650-620-9798.
The FRISKY rides will go out at 6:15 PM.The REGULAR rides will go out at 6:30 PM.
The WHITE SOCKS ride will go out at 6:35 PM.
The FBG or Fat Bottomed Girl ride will go out at 6:35 PM.
The STRAGGLERS ride may form and start chasing around 6:45 PM.
For future planning, we have the upcoming start times each week for the first wave of the REGULAR ride posted on our Community Calendar
Note we may not have leaders for each ride but usually someone knows their way around. All groups will meet back here at Passion Trail Bikes right around dark for the usual story telling & beverage enjoyment. We will have stuff to eat plus chips and fatty snacks and EANABS to pair up with the Devil’s Canyon Brewery’s Full Boar Scotch Ale, Silicon Blonde Ale, and Little Devil Root Beer. We will hang out until about 10pm, so come on down, even if you can’t make the ride! Passion Parties are better with YOU in the mix!
2. Soquel Demo Forest HIHNS MILL ROAD CLOSED!Skip to next topic
We received the following notice from Ed Orre, Assistant Forest Manager of Soquel Demonstration State Forest:
As many of you know, the parking lot for Soquel Demonstration State Forest and about 0.5 miles of the top of Hihn’s Mill Road is located on land owned by Roger Burch and managed by Redwood Empire Sawmills.
Redwood Empire is currently logging the Burch property in this area. You probably saw some of their loggers camped in the parking lot. I’m not sure how long their operation will last but it could be several more months. Our parking lot is their log landing. We were just advised that they plan to work along Hihn’s Mill Road for the next few days. They will be falling timber along the road and yarding (dragging) logs to the nearest landing. This means that …..
Hihn’s Mill Road through their property will be closed until further notice. This includes the bridge, parking lot and about 0.5 miles of road.

Closed area shown in yellow. Entrance and Exit only at the top of the Ridge Trail
We’re sorry about the short notice and inconvenience. I will post signs around the area this evening so everyone starting a ride will get the message. Hopefully the road will be clear and safe by this weekend. Please do not try to hike-a-bike around the road there because that will be even more dangerous. If you absolutely have to get a ride in, please go in and out on Ridge Trail.
Redwood Empire’s last operation in this area was in 1995. Most timber harvesting operations in Santa Cruz County have a minimum re-entry cycle of ten years but the average is about 15 years. Things should return to normal soon.
I will post on this thread on MTBR to let everyone know when the roadway is back open. The parking lot itself however, will remain closed for a longer period of time – but that is another story.
Please pass the word to anyone you know planning to ride at SDSF soon.
