The Ecocyclist says “Hey, the Buckeye Trees are leafing out! Spring is coming! WOOT!

Oh, and sunset is at 5:26pm today, with twilight ending a little after 6pm. So, if you can cut out of work by 4:00pm, you can get a quick ride in before dark!

This week we are doing trail MAINTENANCE, because the dirt is to wet to dig – clay sticking to shovels is no fun at all. We will be working on improving drainage and brushing back the Chaparral Trail. Meet at the corner of Somerset Drive and Wakefield Drive, off Hallmark. Meeting time is 8:30am.
Give Patty a holler at patty@passiontrailbikes.com, and let her know you’re coming. And shoot an email out to your friends to let them know you’ll be helping out. Be a recruiter too! Project details will be emailed to people who RSVP.
Upcoming dates on our trailwork calendar are as follows:
Sunday 1/31
Saturday 2/13
Sunday 2/28
Saturday 3/20
Sunday 4/11
Thursday 4/22

Shane and Charles will be out on the Ridge Trail in Soquel Forest on Saturday Feb 6th. You can join them and repay your debt to the singletrack faeries after those rain rides you did earlier this month. Visit the Trailworkers.com website to sign up and let them know they have another volunteer.

You know what that means! Cool brand new bikes to test ride for free, from Specialized, Giant, Santa Cruz, Ibis, and MORE TBA. We will get the demo bike roster up organized and start taking reservations in a couple weeks. But in the meantime put the weekend in your calendar!

MBOSC will be hosting the Santa Cruz Mountain Bike Festival on the weekend of Feb 27/28, 2010 featuring the California premier of Awesome Land: Women of Dirt on Feb 28 at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz. This film celebrates the women in gravity mountain biking. Lisa Myklak, Emily Johnston and Tammy Donahugh are featured in the film and will be present at the premier along with the filmmaker Mark Brent. Following the film we will host a Q&A session with these women riders, moderated by local cycling journalist Karen Kefauver.
This event will also include a group ride with the female riders at Soquel Demonstration Forest (a.k.a Demo) on Saturday 2/27 and a Jump Jam hosted by Epicenter Cycling in Aptos next to the Post Office on 2/28 before the Premier. There will be autograph opportunities, music, and lots of great riding by both local and out of town Pros.
Proceeds from this event will benefit Soquel Demo Forest. As you may know, Demo is one of the best places for legal intermediate/advanced mountain biking in the Bay Area. The parking lot is a safe place to park while riding and has been a great location to host bike demos, BBQs and group rides. This lot is currently closed due to environmental issues. The funds raised from this event will go towards mitigating these issues and to re-open the lot for everyone’s enjoyment.

Belmont Seeks Residents for Commission Openings
Belmont, CA — The deadline is fast approaching for application to one of Belmont’s commissions. If you are interested in serving on the Parks and Recreation Commission (both adult and youth seats available) the deadline is 5:00 P.M. Friday, January 29, 2010, and the application is available on the City’s website: www.belmont.gov under “City Council and Commissions,” by calling (650) 595-7413, or in person at the City Clerk’s Office, City Hall, One Twin Pines Lane, Suite 375.
The Open Space Master Plan is likely to come up before the commission for review sometime in the next two years, so it would be great to have a Waterdog enthusiast on the commission! And youth commissioners are respected and have a voice on the commission! Please apply if you live in Belmont!
6. Big Basin General Plan meeting Feb 4th, Los GatosVisit the State Parks website for this plan here: http://parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21486
General Plan Preparation
Despite being the oldest California state park, Big Basin Redwoods has never had a general plan. California State Parks is currently in the process of preparing a General Plan in order to provide a template for future park management resource protection and visitor use. Public input is an important part of this planning process.
Mountain bikers NEED to attend and provide input on elements of the plan that could affect mountain bike access to the park, including singletrack trails!

Input from these meetings will be used to develop a preferred alternative and produce the Preliminary General Plan and Draft EIR for Big Basin Redwoods State Park.
