1. Trailwork Saturday 11/7 8:30am – Cross-Training That FEELS GREAT

OK, folks, it’s time. Time to help get this trail DONE. Time for both giving back to the park and the trails, and time for paying forward. If you’ve never built a section of trail before, let me clue you in to a little secret we trailbuilders know about: You build it, you OWN it. Like for the rest of your life. You can’t ride a section of trail you worked on and not remember. I was here. I built this. This trail is the product of my own labor. I gave. Right here, I sweated, I destroyed a pair of socks, I got a blister on the curve between my thumb and forfinger, and my triceps haven’t been the same since. And it was amazing. Yup. Trail work is like that. It FEELS GREAT.

So, come join us. Get that feeling of being one of the few. A trailbuilder. Yes, you. This isn’t going to be some little footpath that will get overgrown with weeds and forgotten. This is going to be one of those trails that you will be able to come back and enjoy 30 years from now. That feeling you get, when you traverse those 10 or 12 feet of trail where you spent half of a perfectly good Saturday toiling, is AWESOME. And we need a whole lot of you to get that feeling. It takes a lot of volunteer hours to build 5000 feet of trail. Especially when 10% of the trail is not just dug into the dirt, but involves constructing bridges, switchbacks, and retaining walls. We need help.

Travis and crew dig in the new trail on the south side of the lake

This Saturday, November 7th, from 8:30am to a bit after noon, we will work on the new Lake Loop alignment around Waterdog Lake. We will work on finishing up some retaining walls that we started last fall, right before the dirt turned to dust. We will move earth, compact it, top it off with crushed rock for an all-weather surface. We will wire in retaining wall posts so they stay standing straight. We will dig dirt, and sculpt the hillside. We will make a trail in one of the prettiest places in the whole park.

Please, PLEASE volunteer some time this season to help out on this awesome project. If you can come this Saturday, please RSVP to Patty at patty@passiontrailbikes.com, and let her know you’re coming. If you can’t come this weekend, please pick a date or two below and put it in your calendar, and shoot an email out to your friends to let them know you’ll be helping out. We need recruiters too!

People who are so kind as to RSVP will get an email from Patty with details on the project, including meeting location and some other helpful info. RSVP’s are important because that allows for the proper amount of tools, planning, bagels and coffee to be prepared.

Dates on our trailwork calendar are as follows:

Saturday 11/7
Saturday 12/19
Sunday 1/10
Sunday 1/31
Saturday 2/13
Sunday 2/28
Saturday 3/20

3. La Honda Creek Open Space Final Hearing on Draft Master Plan 11/12
Skip to next topic

We received the message below from MROSD regarding the public hearing now set for Thursday, November 12th, at 7:00pm in Los Altos. We’ve been waiting for this, which is the last hearing at which the board (most likely) votes to adopt the Draft Master Plan, after that changes are very unlikely once the plan starts the EIR process. We need cyclists to show up and speak in favor of allowing bikes in both La Honda Creek and Driscoll Ranch. Please carve some time out to attend.

Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District

Join us November 12
for a Public Hearing on the
La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve Master Plan

When: Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: MROSD Administrative Office [Map]
330 Distel Circle
Los Altos, CA 94022

At the hearing, District staff will give an overview of the master plan focusing on the two public use options created for the preserve. The public will again have the opportunity to comment on the master plan, as they have at two previous hearings held in May and June.

The District’s Board of Directors is expected to vote for one of the two public use options and tentatively adopt the La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve master plan.  Once the Board takes these actions, an environmental review will be conducted and released for public comment in early 2010.  Final adoption of the master plan will occur during a public meeting at a later date.

The Nov. 12 meeting agenda will be available online shortly.  For additional project updates and information, please visit the La Honda Creek Master Plan project page.

Participation is key to a great plan!

Public Scoping for Presidio Coastal Trail Improvements Project

The National Park Service (NPS) is preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) and is soliciting public comments on a proposal to improve three miles of the California Coastal Trail within the Presidio of San Francisco. In summary, the proposed actions would create an accessible, multi-use trail from the southwestern end of the Golden Gate Bridge to the Baker Beach area, create multi-use access to the Golden Gate Bridge from Merchant Road, and reconfigure beach access and visitor parking on the coastal bluffs.  For the actions proposed below, this project would modify the Presidio Coastal Trail approved in the 2003 Presidio Trails and Bikeways Master Plan.

Proposed Actions
  • New trail bridge serving pedestrians and bicyclists spanning the Battery Marcus Miller Covered Way
  • Expanded parking at Merchant Road
  • Expanded parking at Langdon Court
  • New accessible, pedestrian-only trail removed from Lincoln Boulevard
  • Removal of the Sand Ladder to compensate for the new accessible trail constructed through sensitive habitat and to address long-term maintenance problems
  • Enhanced beach access to Baker Beach via the new accessible trail and improvements to the Battery Chamberlain access point.

For more information about this project please see the informational flyer posted on the Public PEPC site at http://parkplanning.nps.gov/parkHome.cfm?parkId=303 (click on the project title, then on Document List).

5. Marin Trails Access Article and Poll

Yesterday the Marin County Board of Supervisors held a public hearing on increasing mountain bike access to county-managed lands in Marin.

The meeting was well attended by cyclists and non-cyclists alike, and reports are that many divergent viewpoints were shared. The Marin Independent Journal has posted and article and a POLL about the meeting on their website, where they quote Supervisor Charles McGlashan as saying

“Any plan would not bring bikes onto existing single-track trails, but would make sure the bike community is “enfranchised.” He also supported the idea of a park or trails for bikers. “We can’t ‘just say no.’ To stiff-arm the mountain bike community would be a terrible mistake,” he said.

Please view the article on the MarinIJ website here and VOTE on the poll regarding opening more trails to mountain bikes.

6. ROMP Elections Results

On Monday October 27th, ROMP held their annual elections for the Board of Directors, and several people you know got nabbed for tours of duty with this illustrious organization. After having been a member since about 1997, Patty shed her self-imposed title of club gadfly for the weightier burden of club president. Charles, after several years on the board as secretary, was relieved of that specific duty while still having the open-ended role of director at large tied to his back.

Stay tuned for more info on ROMP happenings here in this newsletter, or better, go on over to the ROMP website and become a member today!
