Summer is a tough time to run a bike shop. Everybody wants to ride, the shop is hopping, repairs are stacking up and we are all working overtime. We stay at the workbench while our customers get to ride and go on road trips.
We can only keep this up so long before getting crazy and maybe a bit bitter. To solve this dilemma and the inherent whiny unfairness of it all, we are taking off for Downieville and the shop will be closed on Sunday. It’s our once a year summer road trip and we, and our customers, will all be better of for it.
Please accept our apologies if this creates an inconvenience for you. We will be back on Tuesday and will do our best to get back to work with a smile and renewed enthusiasm for what we do.

Seems our head mechanic, John, is rather fast. He took Charles’ Enduro up to Downieville Classic last weekend to race in the cross country race. If you aren’t familiar with the race – it is an epic, point to point race, with lots of climbing.
Here is what the race promoter says about the course…

Charles said that we should make this the bike of the year, as it may be the best looking bike we have done all year. The green carbon frame sure is pretty, and will definitely blend in well with our beautiful Santa Cruz Mountains forest trails.

It had to happen sooner or later.
We need another mechanic, and we need one now.
Actually we needed one last month too, but we are just now getting the word out.
If you think you would like to work here, or know someone who would, please send them our way. We will be accepting resumes for about another week or so. Here’s the ad we posted on craigslist:

Here is a way to waste time when you are stuck at your computer and can’t be out riding. It is a little game called “Hit the Cyclist” put out by a UK bicycle retailer. Doesn’t sound that appealing, but it is actually quite addictive. How far can you get him? Can you beat my 1018 meters?

I’ll get asked “What do you ride?” in the course of most business days, and while I sometimes tailor a glib answer to support whatever bike I happen to be showing that person when they asked the question, the real answer is quite complicated.

Well, pictures at some point later, maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, but I just got back from the Sierra’s. I re road the course of the 2001 IMBA Epic on the South Yuba River Trail in Nevada City, and the next day did my Downieville favorite, Big Boulder to Third Divide.

Here is a contest entry for you hard core folks. Santa Cruz will be choosing 1 man and 1 woman to be taken on a ride with Mark Weir and Rachel Lloyd. If you can stay with these folks on a 60-80 mile course with over 10k feet of climbing, you get to keep the Nomad they let you ride.
Details at http://www.santacruzbicycles.com/hr4/.

One of our customers, Tom Rice, wrote up a race report from the Sea Otter. A passion for mountain biking sure comes out. And for those who haven’t raced, it gives some insight in to racing… (note – kind of a long posting…)

Conversation recently overheard of folks looking at our web site:
Person A: “Hey, is that a new logo over in the Bike Brands Carried section of the web site?”
Person B: “Huh, where’s that?”
Person A: “It’s in that column over on the right side of the page.”
Person B: “Wow, you’re right dude. That is new. Does that mean they are carrying them now?”
Person A: “I hope so, they make a good addition to what the shop carries”
