Downieville in September
We’re organizing another Passion Trail Bikes Downieville Trip September 15-16-17, Sat through Monday. The time shift eases commute issues, to keep the grin factor high. The noon shuttle on Saturday makes it possible to get up at a reasonable hour and still make the 4.5 hour drive to D-Ville in time; returning Monday means we’re traveling against the commute, for the most part. Usually some of us stop in Auburn for dinner to avoid traffic in Sacto and it makes for a relaxing drive home.
We’ve booked rooms at the Riverside Inn again & made shuttle reservations with Yuba. If you want to be part of the fun, All you need to do is mail or bring in a cash or check deposit of $50 to hold your place on the fun wagon. Total costs will vary, but will be around $60 per night for the room & $20 per day for the shuttle. So for now all we need is the deposit to hold you space, which is limited to about a dozen fun hogs. You are also welcome to bring your non-riding partner; D’ville is great for hiking, hanging out, swimming, fishing etc. There will likely be a FBG shuttle ride on either Saturday or Sunday. More details to those who join up. Deposits are due here no later than Aug 21, that’s when we have to give back any unused space…. who wants that? Check out our blog entry for some pics and videos from our last trip.

Wednesday Rides
For those who come to the Wednesday evening rides, we are starting to adjust the ride times to make sure we get enough riding in. Next week’s ride will start at 6:15 for early ride, 6:30pm for slow ride, and 6:45 for latecomer ride. The FBG ride usually goes out with the early ride. Likely the next few weeks will be the same start times, but at some point we will have to move the start times another 30 minutes forward, so pay attention to the emails.
Dirt Jumping Clinics Filling Up
We’ve managed to coordinate some dates for Chris Duncan to teach you a bit about dirt jumping. It should be a fun and educational event, and we are excited to help put this together. The intermediate level classes on 9/8 and 9/9 are full, but we are putting together a wait list. On 8/12, we have three spaces left in the advanced clinic, and on 8/26, we have three spaces in the women’s clinic. All classes will be held at Shells in Foster City. Class cost is $100, and you must send or bring us a check made out to Chris Duncan to reserve a spot. Call Patty at 650-620-9798 for up to the minute info on availability.

We are back, and well refreshed from a few days in Downieville. Had a great time, both on and off the trail. Here are some highlights – just a quick posting, as many more photos will come later.

Summer is a tough time to run a bike shop. Everybody wants to ride, the shop is hopping, repairs are stacking up and we are all working overtime. We stay at the workbench while our customers get to ride and go on road trips.
We can only keep this up so long before getting crazy and maybe a bit bitter. To solve this dilemma and the inherent whiny unfairness of it all, we are taking off for Downieville and the shop will be closed on Sunday. It’s our once a year summer road trip and we, and our customers, will all be better of for it.
Please accept our apologies if this creates an inconvenience for you. We will be back on Tuesday and will do our best to get back to work with a smile and renewed enthusiasm for what we do.

Here is a way to waste time when you are stuck at your computer and can’t be out riding. It is a little game called “Hit the Cyclist” put out by a UK bicycle retailer. Doesn’t sound that appealing, but it is actually quite addictive. How far can you get him? Can you beat my 1018 meters?

I’ll get asked “What do you ride?” in the course of most business days, and while I sometimes tailor a glib answer to support whatever bike I happen to be showing that person when they asked the question, the real answer is quite complicated.

Here is a contest entry for you hard core folks. Santa Cruz will be choosing 1 man and 1 woman to be taken on a ride with Mark Weir and Rachel Lloyd. If you can stay with these folks on a 60-80 mile course with over 10k feet of climbing, you get to keep the Nomad they let you ride.

One of our customers, Tom Rice, wrote up a race report from the Sea Otter. A passion for mountain biking sure comes out. And for those who haven’t raced, it gives some insight in to racing… (note – kind of a long posting…)

Michelle Kashima, Chair person for the Share the Road Committee for Orange County Wheelmen has created a petition called Share the Road, which can be viewed and signed by clicking the link below. Because of the help of California cyclists and non-cyclists alike we are gaining signatures on this very important cause. The California Share the Road license plate is in our grasp, but we need more signatures (7,500) to send it to Sacramento and make this special interest plate available for all.

It all started about 30 years ago when Charlie Kelly and a few friends decided to preemptively burn a few thousand calories before sitting down to Thanksgiving Dinner. They called it the Appetite Seminar and rode from the town of Fairfax in Marin on their Klunkers, before such things were called MountianBikes, up over Pine Mountain and down Repack back into town. This ride became an annual event, and for a few close friends, is as much a part of Thanksgiving as mandatory face time with the inlaws and drinking before noon.
