Passion Solstice Soiree and Naughty ride

Posted by Patty Tue, 18 Dec 2007 22:44:00 GMT

On Friday, December 21, beginning around 7pm, we will be celebrating the celestial transition known as Winter Solstice. On the Solstice, the Earth’s axial tilt lines up with the sun’s rays and brings the northern hemisphere the shortest day and longest night.

To mark the occasion, we will be honoring two creatures whose names grace the peak latitudes marked by annual sinuous solar movements on Earth’s surface.

First we will consume some of the world’s most delicious goat cheese, produced from Alpine goats Capra hircus grazing in the lovely town of Pescadero, to recognize this time of year when the sun is directly over the Tropic of Capricorn.

Next we will make our way through a ruddy pile of Half Moon Bay’s delicious Dungeness crab, Cancer magister to mark our longing for the warm days of summer, when the sun is over the Tropic of Cancer.

Of course, we will have to have some wine, and some rum, and some candles as a nice warm source of light. And Jay will be bringing cheesecake for dessert.

We will also need YOU to help us celebrate properly. So please join us!

Weather appears to be favorable for a Naughty ride at 1:00pm launching from the Passion lot to head up to Waterdog.

Friday Partly cloudy in the morning then becoming mostly sunny. Patchy dense fog in the morning. Highs in the lower to mid 50s. North winds 5 to 10 mph.

If conditions are a bit moist, you are most welcome to come to our little gathering with a bit of mud under your eye.

To help us when we do our shopping at the wharf over in that coastal hamlet, please RSVP to this evite by 8am Friday so we can buy the right amount of sweet crustaceans for evening consumption.

On my last trip to Tahoe, I learned two things

Posted by Charles Tue, 30 Oct 2007 03:31:00 GMT

One, when you’re at that point during an epic ride, when you feel you’re really out there, absolutely taxing yourself, just over the hump of finding out you will complete this ride and return alive, when you feel you have met Mother Nature on a level playing field and given her a formidable challenge, a pretty girl will go by. She’ll be wearing little more than a sports bra, and carrying little more than a water bottle. She’ll be cheerful. And she will make you reconsider what you think about time, distance, and effort.

All Hallows Eve Singles and Spouses Spooktacular

Posted by Patty Wed, 17 Oct 2007 18:47:00 GMT

You know who you are. You’re the one who turns the porch light out on Halloween. Or maybe not, but you’ve wondered if you could get away with it. Well this year, you have a great excuse. You’re going to be at Passion, hanging out in your own comfortable clothes, or maybe somebody else’s, pretending to be dead, or very scarily alive. You’ll get to look your worst and act like a kid and everybody is going to wonder who you really are.

So come on down. There will be a basket of treats at the door but instead of some fattening candy, maybe you’ll get a patch kit, or a chain pin, or a tube, or not-yet bloody bandaids, or who knows what kinda trick the shop boys might play with you. Click below for details and to RSVP.

The Specialized Eskar Control 2Bliss Tire –Trail Test

Posted by tom Mon, 08 Oct 2007 03:20:00 GMT

Initial Impressions (before mounting):

This tire looks like a rear to me but I’m mounting it on the front because that’s what I was to told to do with it. The tire is lightweight and the sidewalls are very supple and flexible so I’m somewhat suspicious of its suitability for my 170mm (6.7 inch) travel Versus Blitz II. The knobs look like they’ll provide good traction but, as there are no ramps I don’t expect a fast roller. The tread is also not particularly deep so I don’t expect much in loose conditions. My initial expectations have been set low.

Bicycle Film Festival in San Francisco Sept 19-22

Posted by Patty Fri, 07 Sep 2007 03:55:00 GMT

I got this info from one of the club email lists I’m on, and it makes me think we ought to take a train, and make the trip up to the city for a special shop ride to watch Klunkerz which is playing Saturday at 7pm. Rumor has it you can take the 5:48 train from Belmont, transfer to the 6:11 BART at Milbrae, and get off at 16th & Mission at 6:41.

The Bicycle Film Festival will be playing from September 19th through the 22nd in San Francisco. Along with our 8 different programs of shorts, full-length features, documentaries, animations and creative endeavors, we will also be hosting several live music events, a street party and a bicycle scavenger hunt. Tickets and specific information about the San Francisco event are at this location: http://bicyclefilmfestival.com/2007_site/sf/

We’re quite proud of the selection of films that we’re screening this year, and we’re especially excited about Klunkerz. Klunkerz is the history of the modern mountain bike. This film documents the rise of a huge cultural movement that was pioneered in Marin County on the trails of Mt. Tamalpais. Mountain Biking was born out of the creative scene surrounding the San Francisco Bay Area hippy and rock world of the sixties and seventies.

This film features the characters of this day such as Gary Fisher, Joe Breeze, Charlie Kelly and Alan Bonds. The races began amongst friends getting stoned and partying and flying down the mountain on their pre forties bikes with fat tires: “Klunkerz.” These fun escapades turned into a sport that changed and maybe even saved the bike industry.

The Bicycle Film Festival celebrates the bicycle. We are into all styles of bikes and biking. If you can name it, we’ve probably either ridden or screened it. What better way to celebrate these lifestyles than through art, film, music and performance? We bring together all aspects of bicycling to advocate its ability to transport us in many ways.

Passion in Downieville 9/15 to 9/17 -- Join us!

Posted by Patty Thu, 23 Aug 2007 22:48:00 GMT

Extend your summer in the Sierras! Passion Trail Bikes has reserved a handful of rooms in the Riverside Inn , and a bunch of seats on the Yuba Expeditions shuttle for a three-day weekend in Downieville.

We have spots available and would like to invite our customers and friends to jump in and join us. This is a “non-profit” weekend and all participants will pay actual costs with no markup added, so it doesn’t hurt your wallet any more to join us than to do it on your own.

The Vibe:
The weekend is going to be fun, casual, and supported with logistics and meals. Given that most of the dining establishments are iffy these days in terms of actually being open, I will be doing a bunch of cooking, and serving meals on the deck overlooking the Downie River.

The Menu:
B’fast Sun/Mon: French Toast breakfast on Sunday, Eggs and Bacon, or Cereal and Fruit on Monday.
Lunch Sun/Mon: Sandwich buffet (I set out bread, ingredients and ziplocks; you make it).
Dinner Sat/Sun: The evening meal will include some variety of pasta or other carb, a yummy salad, grilled meats and vegies, a dessert, wine and beer, and maybe some sort of icy tequila and lime juice concoction. Also EANABS for true hydration needs. Monday night we usually hit a restaurant in Auburn on the way home.

TransRockies Arrival

Posted by Patty Mon, 13 Aug 2007 21:36:00 GMT

“Bag your Barf”

That’s what someone wrote on the air sickness bag in the seat pocket in front of my seat. I’m not sure what meaning I should take from this: ride ‘til you puke maybe?

So back in May we heard at the shop that one of our good customers is in need of a partner for this event up in Canada called the Trans Rockies Challenge. It is a 7 day stage race, all point to point taking place in the Kootenay Rockies of British Columbia. The mileage is about 350 for the week and altitude gain of around 37,000’. I checked into a bit, looked at the calendar, saw I had a couple of months to train and figured, why not. I emailed Michael and got signed up.

John and Michael are off to race the TransRockies

Posted by Patty Fri, 10 Aug 2007 17:46:00 GMT

Team Passion Trail is heading out for 7 days of epic endurance racing through the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

According to the TransRockies website,
The TransRockies Challenge has quickly earned the reputation as being the toughest and most rugged of the epic endurance mountain bike races. Hundreds of competitors from all over the World—Olympians to amateurs—come every year to spend seven days deep in the Canadian Rockies taking on the trails, the elements and themselves. It is truly the Challenge of a Lifetime.

The two-person team format, though driven by the added safety element in the backcountry, adds an element of camaraderie and bonding not seen in solo races. When combined with the remoteness of the surroundings and the moving athlete village it means that that riders, staff and volunteers spend a full week immersed in a tight, multi-national community. During the week, they face challenges together, forging friendships and memories which will last a lifetime.

Though the race is held in early August- the height of Canadian summer-competitors face everything aspect of high mountain weather from heat in the 100s to snow, hail and driving rain.

We are really excited about the team’s prospects for great adventure and speedy finishes. We will try to post updates on the race as we get them.
