Pacifica Ride Report

Here is a ride report from Jay, who did a ride with Charles and some others this past Monday up in Pacifica.

When you have no meetings, a boss out of town, some time off to burn, a new downhill bike, and a case of the Mondays, there’s only one thing to do – Go out to the coast and ride! The blooming spring colors, ocean views and quality of people couldn’t have been better today. Also, Tom and Charles had matching shoes, which somehow is less controversial than when Sterling and I show up in matching socks. Anyway…

Down at the bottom, there’s a large stand of Eucalyptus. Lots of dirt jumps, step ups, drops and stunts.

Hey, I think long and hard before we ride together about which pair of socks you will be wearing. The question is, do I want to avoid wearing the same or not?

You don’t know that half of it…
Hi Kid’s, Did you bother to ride the “Crack”? I was having a chat with Lee McCormack & I happened to remember riding it for the first time back in the late 80’s. A Montara Mountain bike race which name escapes me. I can still remember some guy named Ferrentino passing me on the climb to the turnaround @ Leadville. He rides up & says, “your socks Don’t match”, then he just pedaled off. Thanks Mike. Petey from the Great Northwett.
We didn’t make it that far up the mountain that day. I’m not convinced Crack has a high enough fun/work ratio. compared to other options. We did do the Mile/Boy Scout loop above, broke for lunch in Linda Mar, then went back and did the same loop again. We blew a couple hours just sessioning Boy Scout alone. I think this was similar to your race course. You probably climbed pavement to the saddle, then climbed the Y, doubled back toward the pavement then switched back again up toward Mile. I think the name of the bike shop that put it on was Sunrise, next to the Post Office. Mike Ayala was the shop owner that designed the course, and built the part he needed to make a loop.

I think the Crack is not worth the fun/pain ratio!
I did the crack a little while ago. Its worth it to do once but thats about it. After boy scout, you have to either lose a couple hundred feet in elevation and push really far up the montera mountain trail or go straight up the crack. Its really fun though, its very narrow and there are a few good drops. What you guys should try is a trail called Nelson. Its an offshoot of the eucalyptus forest run. After the step down, the two doubles and then the single, take an immediate left (before the two berms and the big dirt jumps). That trail is really steep and technical and ALOT of fun. At the end of it, it loops back into the eucalyptus forrest trail. Its pretty sick. Reminds me alot of some runs at northstar
