October Build of the Month - 29er Specialized Stumpjumper

Posted by PeterD Sun, 10 Feb 2008 18:22:00 GMT

This customer brought some parts in for Charles to build up a 29er bike around (and yes, he only brought one derailer in, though I don’t think that is he reason this bike ended up as a 1 by 9).

Charles worked with the customer on spec’ing the rest, aiming to build a solid trail bike for a very fit athlete, with a variety of durable, light weight components that work well and look great together.

The Selle SMP Evolution saddle is pretty unique, and was a special order. Some additional highlights are the transparent chain guard and chainstay guard, 1×9 drive train, and hand built wheels.

Ok, I am running a bit behind on posting BOTMs… Sorry about that.

Thats exactly why this bike ended up as a 1×9. I had the vision the entire way, Charles just helped clean my vision up for me.

    No chainguide needed?

  4. Charles said 9 days later:

Nope. The chain stays on the one ring the same way it would stay on any middle chainring on a triple set up.

I’ve got a 1×9 on my salsa hardtail and I do have some chain retention problems… I’m guessing since I don’t have a front derailer the chain doesn’t have a way of realigning when it starts getting really bumpy and pops off. Aside from running a front derailer, do you have any simple chainguide solutions (ie inside and outside ring guards) that don’t require a full-on downhill chainguide? I’ve looked around a bit and haven’t found what I’m looking for yet.

We have set up a couple different things for cyclocross racers using 1×9’s and 1×10’s. Both use a light weight plate on the outside of the chainring, like a Salsa Crossing Guard or Ring Dinger. On the inside you can use either another plate, or a Third Eye Chain Watcher mounted to the seat tube. Both systems are cleaner and quieter than a DH guide. Passion has both in stock if you want see them.

My chain was popping off on big drops but I purchased a third eye chain watcher and hit some of the drops where I would lose my chain and no problem.
